Achieve Well, Aim High, Have Fun

Toys Week

The children told us in pupil questionnaires that they would like to learn about toys so we held a special ‘Toys Week’!

In preparation for the week, all children worked with Tan Draig, creative practitioner, to create some large scale toys in their classrooms. Class 1 children made a super puppet theatre complete with puppets and in Class 2 the children made a huge ‘Ker Plunk’. The children in Class 3 made a large toy factory complete with very large chimney! In Class 4 children made two very big teddy bears named Buster and Spencer. A long and complicated marble run was created by Class 5 children whilst in Class 6 the children each made a miniature room which went towards creating a large play house. In Class 7 the children made racing cars and enjoyed racing against each other outside whilst ‘wearing’ their car! This work was further enhanced by the children creating miniature racetracks. In the Nursery the children made different games including a very popular dinosaur game, a ‘throwing balls into the Lion’s mouth game’ and a ‘bowling bunnies’ game!

During Toys Week, all children visited the Museum of Childhood at Sudbury Hall to learn about toys from the past, As well as having a guided tour of the museum with National Trust staff, the children completed workshops focused on teddy bears and toys from the past.

Children in Classes 1 & 4 visited ‘Build A Bear’ in Derby to learn how teddy bears are made and to make their own ‘class bear’.

Jenny Hinton worked with children to create some exciting ‘toy’ dances and Partake Theatre delivered some very ‘hands on’ workshops exploring the characteristics of different toys.

As well as undertaking lots of activities in their classrooms, many children took up the challenge of making a toy or a game at home. Children were rewarded with personalised ‘Toy Maker’ certificates.

Parents came into school throughout the week to play with their children in very popular ‘games afternoons’ in the classrooms.

The week culminated with everyone dressing up as a toy. A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all in school during which we held a special assembly to look at each others costumes and all children toured the school to see the work undertaken in all classes.
