Our school is proud to be the ‘lead’ school for the Children’s University in Derby.

Children’s University is a national scheme which rewards children for attending clubs and activities which take place outside of normal school hours. All children in school have a Learning Passport, within which credits are recorded as children attend clubs & activities.

As a school, we pride ourselves on the number and range of out of hours activities offered to pupils. The majority of these are delivered by teachers and teaching assistants in their own time (usually during lunchtimes) and attract no charge.

Children are asked which clubs they would like to attend and we try to meet as many requests as possible. All children who attend a club will be given a slip of paper to take home so parents are aware of the clubs attended.

Last year, the clubs offered by the school were:-

Mathster Chef, singing, recycling art & craft, French, creative writing, Smile Zone, Stars Club, Buddy Readers (with Junior School), recorders, writing, gardening, ICT (computers), art & craft, biscuit decorating, Lego, cake decorating, Tag Rugby, Mandarin Chinese.

Additionally, Derby County Football Club coaches & Premier Sports coaches delivered a range of after-school sports clubs including football, tennis, archery and fencing.

Tim Cremin, our Forest Schools co-ordinator, also ran a very popular After-School Forest Schools Club.

Other out of hours events, eg. Reading Breakfast, Bedtime Reading and school projects undertaken at home also attract credits from the Children’s University for pupils.

Pupils who regularly attend our after-school lending library and our recycling centre also receive credits from the Children’s University.

If your child attends a club out of school and is rewarded with a certificate or trophy, please bring this into school. We will check to see if their club is validated by the Children’s University and if it is they will receive credits in their passport.

At the end of their time at our school, children will take their passports with them and they can continue accumulating credits at other participating schools.

Children receive credits by attending validated clubs. All school clubs are validated; for other validated clubs please visit www.childrensuniversity.co.uk.

Graduation awards start at 30 credits for a bronze award, 65 for a silver award and 100 for a gold award. The awards proceed up to 1000 credits for Gold Fellowship.

Each award must be made up of at least 3 different clubs of which each cannot exceed 10 credits. The cut-off date for each year’s graduation is 31st May; credits earned after this date will be carried forward to the next academic year.

At the end of each academic year, children who have accumulated sufficient credits to receive a certificate from the Children’s University are invited to attend our prestigious graduation ceremony with their family. Children wear mini caps and gowns as they are presented with their certificates. It is always a very special evening for children and their families.

Should you require any further information about the Children’s University please speak with Mrs Houldsworth, our Children’s University coordinator.

Lots of photographs from our last graduation evening may be found under the ‘Wow Factor’ tab.
